Why Meditation Rocks

One of the reasons, I love health and wellness it is because there is always some form of ancient wisdom that holds true for centuries.  One such remedy is meditation.  Some how ancient sages knew that stillness was the key to optimal health.  Maybe they came to this understanding because they didn't have the same distractions that we have today.  I couldn't imagine the healer of an ancient village worrying about his social media updates, passwords, pin numbers, bluetooth & wireless connections, global warming, GMOs, car maintenance, taxes, job stress, kids educations and activities and the list goes on.  However, I do imagine that the stress of an ever changing world such as growing civilizations, foreign invasions, predators, outbreaks, extreme weather patterns, financial burdens and the like are just as impactful.

One of my favorite shows to watch is Super Soul Sunday on OWN.  There was a repeat recently of Russell Simmons' interview.  He was of course highlighting the power of yoga and meditation.  He expanded on how meditation makes us more present, more focused and more productive beings.  He talked about how we can overcome the minds constant chatter by simply being still and allowing the mind to be free of the looping tape called mind stuff.

So why is the ancient practice meditation becoming such a hot topic of the day?  The science is out on meditation and all of its benefits.  The research is showing that meditation is a great practice for hypertension, irritable bowel syndrome, ulcerative colitis, anxiety, depression, insomnia and the list continues to grow.  For more info see https://nccih.nih.gov/health/meditation/overview.htm.  What is now being understood about meditation is that it can not only help those with the above health challenges but it can also be a great tool for prevention of health challenges.

There are many different forms of meditation and it is important to find the style that works for you.  Meditation practices can focus on gazing, visualization, mantras, the breath or even walking.  So it is not difficult to find meditations that fit your personal style.

So how can we get started on our meditative practice?  There are many resources available to help you get started.  Search online for meditation classes in your area.  You can also find meditations on Youtube or order audio CDs to help you build your practice.  If you are in the Atlanta area try http://yogahive.org for a free meditation class every Friday at 6:30pm.  However, keep in mind that it is important to show up for your practice as often as you can.  I personally am offering a free meditation online for the month of March to help those who are interested get moving towards their meditation practice.  Just join my Google Hangout Tuesdays 8:30pm EST.   Hope you make it!

Namaste.
